Located in central Africa, on the border between Chad, Cameroon, Nigeria and Niger. Is about 250 meters above sea level.
The numerous islands that are along the eastern shore of the lake are inhabited and also crocodiles and hippos abound.

The lake now forms the remains of a much larger inland sea that covered about 300,000 square kilometers during the Pleistocene, the last ice age.
