Getting Around Adelaide

Adelaide is a very easy city to get around.  It is more than feasible to explore just by foot, but there is good pubic transport on offer, and there are plenty of taxis around.  If you’d like to get around quick, and also keep it environmentally friendly, why not take a bike and explore on wheels!

The Adelaide Metro is a good way to get around, as well as the Glenelg tram and variety of bus routes on offer.  However, after 6pm and on weekends, public transport doesn’t run as frequently.  On certain routes, public transport can also be unreliable and sometimes unsafe, so if you can afford to, renting a car is a good option.  There are plenty of car rental stores available, offering good deals on rental. There are plenty of places in the city centre for parking, allowing you to explore on foot should you want to.  Adelaide also has much more to offer than just the CBD and renting a car will allow you to explore far beyond – the many beaches along the coastline and the beautifully scenic wineries and hills.

Taking taxis is also an option. They can be hailed on the street, and are generally more readily available in the city centre.  There are also a number of different taxi companies to choose from, so it might be worth noting down a few numbers before you head out.  Some notable companies include Access Cabs, Suburban Taxis, Yellow Cabs and Adelaide Independent.

Another way to get around Adelaide is by bike.  The Adelaide City Bikes Scheme ensures that bikes are free for hire between 9am and 4.30pm from the Bike SA Office.  They can also be picked up from six other locations in the city during their respective opening hours.  Hire also includes a helmet and bicycle lock if required.  At the time of hire, a current drivers license or passport must be produced and deposited for each bike user.  It is also possible to hire overnight, however it is best to contact the Bike SA office beforehand to establish a quote.

If you’d prefer to take a bus, a single ticket for an adult costs around $4.60.  The fare generally depends on which zones you’re traveling and the time of day, however you can buy adult day tickets for $8.60.

Wherever you’re getting around to, don’t forget your gold card. If you’ve used it along the way and earned enough rewards points, you may be able to redeem them against things like travel, shopping, entertainment or eating out.
